You cannot hope to raise a spiritual champion unless you love God with all your heart, mind, strength, and soul. George Barna Revolutionary Parenting  p. 18

The Challenges for Parents (and the rest of us):

1. ___________________ vs. PERMANENCY

Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

A chilling effect on faith development:

a. Stifles ______________________

"Be still, and know that I am God;  Psalm 46:10

b. Tends to disappointment with God

c. Disengages benefits of spiritual _______________

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Galatians 5:22-23

2. ___________________ vs. CHARACTER

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, Titus 2:11-13

American society enables and encourages parents to make child rearing a communal affair, relying upon institutions such as schools, community organizations, churches, the mass media, and government agencies to pick up the slack and cover for parents while they are trying to change the world in their nine-to-five roles. Barna p. 28

[Revolutionary parents recognized] the role of the church to which they belonged…was to reinforce what was happening in the household.  Barna p. 56

3.  _________________ vs. INTIMACY

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, 1 Peter 2:9a

"Facebook is part of the larger electronic phenomenon deemed social networking, which includes text messaging, Twitter, e-mail, blogging, and so forth—all of which are said to herald a new day in human interaction. But let's stick to Facebook as the prime example and admit that, in the end, Facebook actually sabotages our ability to genuinely connect with others. … While the popularity of Facebook facilitates broad connectivity, I believe it does so at the expense of intimacy. Intimacy is what we really want. But because we are lazy and fearful creatures, we'll settle for connectivity, because connectivity suggests intimacy but without all the bother."  Christianity Today senior managing editor Mark Galli
